Jacqueline Mooney-O'Brien
Consultant
Knowing that a child’s formative time in nature is the gateway to life-long ecosystem service understandings of forests, meadows, native plants and invertebrates, the Little Leaf forest preschool program validates the child’s innate sense of connection to nature. Jackie brings her experience as a preschool lead teacher, WildEarth certified outdoor educator and nature-immersion facilitator, and education for sustainability developer, to Little Leaf. Loris Malaguzzi once said “Children yearn to discover the measures and relations of complex situations.” Jackie is ardently curious about system interdependencies and is eager to support children’s social, emotional, empathic and physical growth through child-directed play in nature. She is a licensed NYS teacher with over 10 years of early childhood teaching experience, an MS in Educ.Psych. from Fordham and an MS in Early Childhood and Elem. Ed. from Bank Street College. In her spare time, she enjoys fast knitting, slow jogging, learning native plants and trees, cooking, and hiking with her husband and two adult sons.

Kate Lanfer
Assistant Teacher, Bethany Arts Community
Kate’s love for nature started when she was a kid, spending hours outside imagining, exploring, and sometimes hiding in her secret fort of azalea bushes in her backyard. Those early adventures sparked her curiosity and showed her firsthand how the outdoors can inspire creativity, problem-solving, and joy—lessons she carries into every class she leads.
Since 2017, Kate has been guiding children and families through outdoor, play-based adventures, and brings over 15 years of experience as an early childhood educator. She holds a dual Master’s degree in Elementary and Special Education and is a certified nature-based educator.
Kate believes that spending time in nature is essential for children's physical, emotional, and social development. She is passionate about connecting kids and their families to nature and one another through playful outdoor learning experiences.
Kate lives in Yorktown with her husband, their three curious and creative kids, two cats, two fish, and one dog. She loves moss, mud, and big snowstorms. She also loves photography, hot sauce, camping with her family, and coffee!

Ana Beattie
Assistant Teacher, Lenoir Nature Preserve
Raised in the woodlands of the UK, and rural Spain, Ana spent countless hours in open-ended outdoor play. Those early experiences formed a lifelong love for nature and shaped how she connects with the world—seeing nature as a place where people feel calm, grounded, present, and part of something bigger. That feeling continues to guide her work with children and her approach to community.
Her professional journey has spanned emergency management, global travel, and nonprofit work, each chapter enriching her understanding of community, adaptability, and service. Over the past five years, she has served as a local youth sports coach and Girl Scout troop leader, supporting children in building confidence, resilience, and joy through teamwork and play.
At Little Leaf, she brings a spirit of fun and a steady presence, supporting children navigate challenges and celebrate both individual and collective growth. She is passionate about fostering connection to self and surroundings, and believes deeply in the power of nature-based learning to support the whole child.
Outside of school, Ana can often be found shuttling her family to various activities, and when there's time she'll be camping, playing sports, bike riding, snowboarding, and doing her best to learn how to ski!
